Like The Simpsons and Weird Al, I’ve been a huge Muppet fan for as long as I can remember. I have a very clear memory my mom breaking the news of Jim Henson’s untimely death. I was devestated.
What I don’t remember, and just discovered on YouTube, is how amazing Jim Henson’s funeral was. When I die, I want at least this many puppets singing about it.
Above, I’ve embedded Big Bird’s heart-wrenching rendition of (It’s Not Easy) Being Green. Henson voiced Kermit, so Big Bird performing the frog’s signature song is like a kid-friendly version of Clapton singing While My Guitar Gently Weeps on the anniversary of George Harrison’s death. If you don’t feel something when Big Bird looks up at the end, says, “Thank you Kermit,” and mopes off stage, you’re less human than Cookie Monster.
Here’s another clip from the funeral of the Muppet performers singing some of Henson’s favorite songs. It’s odd to hear such well known voices coming out of humans. There’s also a part 2 which features Gonzo, Electric Mayhem, some Fraggles, and Scooter. It’s a credit to Henson’s designs and the performers’ skill that the Muppets seem so alive, even when you’re seeing the guy with his hand up Elmo’s ass.
