My post-Beatles Paul McCartney obsession continues into week five. From the Live and Let Die (the song) Wikipedia page:
In 1984, McCartney asked “Weird Al” Yankovic when he was going to parody one of his songs.[3][editor’s note: how cool is that?] A couple of years later, Yankovic asked for permission to put his “Live and Let Die” parody “Chicken Pot Pie” on an album (as a courtesy; legally he did not need permission). McCartney denied the use because he is a vegetarian and didn’t want to promote the eating of animal flesh. Fellow vegetarian Yankovic said he respected the decision[4]; however, he has performed the song live.
Weird Al fans are (surprise!) tech savvy, so I immediately hopped on YouTube and found the above clip. I love to defend Al - some of his recent stuff like “Bob” and “White & Nerdy” is better than anything he’s ever done. That’s why I feel really bad embedding the above video, which is not the finest moment of his two decade (!!) career in novelty songs.
UPDATE: The clip is no longer available, but you can still hear “Chicken Pot Pie” here. It’s part of a medely, so you’ll also have to listen to a parody of “Gotta Keep ‘Em Separated” (which is still called “Gotta Keep ‘Em Separated,” but is now about laundry).
