Anonymous asked: Is play value planning on posting a new episode anytime soon?
This is a question I get a lot, and not just anonymously over Tumblr, so let’s talk about it.
“Play Value” was a talking-heads show about videogames I appeared on not only before Bleep Bloop. It was kind-of a spinoff of a show called “Best Game Ever” that I appeared on not only before Bleep Bloop, but before I even worked at CollegeHumor. Play Value was exclusively online and Best Game Ever was on digital cable service MagRack (which was related to OnDemand, I think?). Every episode of Play Value was a crash course in some aspect of the history of gaming, whereas Best Game Ever was a little sillier.
My work on Play Value was limited to just showing up on camera and making jokes about Donkey Kong so unlike, for example, Bleep Bloop I have no insight into what’s going on behind-the-scenes. I have no idea if there will be future episodes, but I can tell you it’s been a long time since we shot one. Both shows were a lot of fun, and they put me on when the top item on my resume was temping at the Bed Bath and Beyond corporate Headquarters in New Jersey, so I’ll always be eternally grateful to the people both. Even though you never see me with anyone else on the show, everyone was great and many of us are still in touch. If they make more and call me, I’ll be there and make sure everyone knows. I’ve had several people tell me they found Bleep Bloop via Play Value, and it’s always really exciting.
Confession - I typed all of this just to tell this story: Magrack produced a variety of shows for all sorts of niches. They had a show about surfing, they had a show about cooking, etc etc. I was on the show about videogames. They had ads in the subway once that showed stereotypes from the different niches getting along - a jock hanging out with a surfer dude, or a chef hanging out with a cheerleader, you get the idea. The tagline was something like “We all do different things but we get together on MagRack.” One was a skiier hanging out with a Saved-By-The-Bell-style pocket protector nerd. At the time I was excited to see promotion for something I was working on, but after I got off the subway I realized that the pocket protector nerd was basically their stand-in for me.
By the way, both shows are now available online. Here’s Play Value and here’s Best Game Ever.
