Enough people (specifically Dave Cho) enjoyed my first movie round-up post so much I decided to periodically do more.
I usually don’t watch that many movies, but I’ll post one of these when I feel like I have enough interesting thoughts. A midnight screening of Jurassic Park just put me over the top.
Daybreakers - Though some really interesting ideas keep this well above flat-out terrible, this may have already replaced Outside Providence as the all-time movie I least remember seeing.
Big Fan - Great! Patton Oswalt is just as good at making me sad as he is at making me laugh. He has achieved complete dominance over my entire range of emotional reactions.
Trailer Park Boys: Countdown to Liquor Day - I really like Trailer Park Boys, but I think I’m ready for them to stop making it now.
Aliens - Sick day movie #1. This movie climbs up my list of all-time favorites every time I watch. You know what videogame it reminds me of? All of them.
Terminator 1 - Sick day movie #2. When I’m sick, I look for a movie that can distract me by constantly upping itself with new ideas. James Cameron might make the best sick day movies. Bonus - his movies are so violent that you don’t often see them on TV, so they always feel fresh.
This Is It - It’s interesting just to see Michael Jackson work, and putting on a Michael Jackson concert looks fucking complicated. I watched this movie in approximately 20 minute chunks over a few nights, but it’s so disjointed it didn’t really matter.
Jurassic Park - Still feels like a rollercoaster ride, which made me think of Avatar. It looks like nothing made before, and everything made since. Everyone remembers the CGI, but a big reason the effects hold up is the amazing Stan Winston robo-puppets (he gets a prominent shout out in the credits for both this and Terminator, and that’s just scratching the surface of his impressive resume). Also, I know that lawyer was a cowardly asshole but I think, karmically, his death is unfairly degrading. He was the one that insisted on making sure the park was safe!
